Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has clarified the company's stance on open-weight AI models, stating that Anthropic has never advocated for a blanket ban on them.
The Details:
He described open-weight models that lack dangerous capabilities as a public good and said the debate should focus on targeted safeguards rather than broad restrictions.
Instead of banning open-weight models, Anthropic argues for measures aimed at the highest-risk frontier systems.
These include restricting exports of advanced AI chips to authoritarian governments, curbing industrial-scale model distillation, and requiring rigorous safety evaluations for sufficiently capable AI models, whether they are open or closed.
Amodei also disputed claims that open-weight models are inherently safer because they enable broader access.
He argued that, for some advanced capabilities, particularly in areas such as biology and cybersecurity, greater access could benefit attackers as much as, or more than, defenders.
The statement comes amid an intensifying global debate over AI openness, safety, and competition, especially as Chinese open-weight models continue to gain momentum.
