OpenAI’s Astra Makes Mathematical Breakthroughs

OpenAI has unveiled new research showing that Astra, its next-generation AI model family, achieved 10 original advances across mathematics, theoretical computer science, and quantum complexity using an estimated $2,000 worth of compute at current Sol API pricing.

Unlike earlier AI demonstrations that solved previously known problems, Astra produced new mathematical results, including the first explicit construction of a non-sofic group, a disproof of Connes' Rigidity Conjecture, improved sphere-packing bounds, advances in coding theory, and new results in quantum complexity.
OpenAI said researchers then converted the AI-generated arguments into formal Lean proofs, creating machine-checkable certificates.
The company emphasized that Astra generated the core mathematical ideas autonomously, while human researchers prepared the results for publication and verification.
Independent mathematicians have described several of the proofs as significant contributions worthy of publication in top-tier academic journals, although the broader mathematical community will continue to review the findings.
The announcement marks one of AI's biggest research milestones to date, highlighting how advanced reasoning models are increasingly contributing to frontier scientific discovery rather than simply assisting with existing knowledge.

Alibaba Unveils Qwen 3.8-Max AI

Alibaba has introduced Qwen3.8-Max, its most advanced AI model to date, claiming performance on par with or better than leading systems from Anthropic and OpenAI across several internal benchmarks.

Set for release next week, Qwen3.8-Max features 2.4 trillion parameters, making it one of the world's largest open AI models.
Alibaba said the model is designed for complex real-world tasks, advanced research, autonomous coding, and long-horizon execution, allowing it to complete multi-step projects with minimal human guidance.
According to Alibaba, an internal evaluation showed Qwen3.8-Max autonomously developing and refining an AI coding tool over 16 days, continuously writing code, testing, fixing errors, and improving its output without user intervention.
The company also reported that internal benchmarks showed Qwen3.8-Max outperforming Anthropic's Fable 5 in areas including multimodal reasoning, visual agent performance, coding, office intelligence, real-world understanding, and visual perception, while delivering results comparable to or exceeding OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Sol. These claims have not been independently verified.
Following the announcement, Alibaba shares rose 4.8% in U.S. trading after gaining about 7% in Hong Kong, highlighting strong investor confidence as China's AI competition with U.S. tech leaders continues to intensify.
