Reflection AI

Reflection AI Launches Beam, Enters the Race

Reflection AI is building open AI models that people can access, use, customize, and deploy. Its latest website announcement introduces Beam, a 501-billion-parameter open-weight model. Reflection says Beam is the first model in a planned series focused on open intelligence.

The Details:

  • Reflection’s approach is built around giving developers, companies, and public-sector organizations more control over AI.

  • Its models can be inspected, fine-tuned, and deployed through APIs or in private, on-premises, air-gapped, and edge environments.

  • Reflection says it plans to release Beam’s weights this month under an Apache 2.0 license, together with documentation and tools for running, evaluating, and fine-tuning the model.

  • A limited early version is currently available to selected users through a waitlist.

The key question is how Beam and Reflection’s upcoming models perform as the company expands its open AI strategy. Reflection says it is already training what comes next.

Open AI

OpenAI Adds Text Watermarks

OpenAI is adding invisible watermarks to AI-generated text to help identify content created by its AI models. The company says its text watermarking technology is designed to support AI-generated content detection under the EU AI Act. OpenAI is also allowing API customers worldwide to opt in to watermarking for select models. Over the coming weeks, the company plans to add invisible watermarks to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text in the EU.

Details:

  • OpenAI’s technology, called textGrain, adds an invisible statistical signal through the model’s word choices.

  • A detector can then check for that signal. However, OpenAI says text watermarking has limitations, especially with short or heavily edited text.

  • In OpenAI’s tests, detection reached about 80% for 200-token passages and about 95% for 400-token passages at a 1% false-positive rate in some tested content. Replacing 25% of words reduced detection to 17% in one evaluation.

OpenAI will initially limit access to its text detector to approved researchers and expert organizations while it evaluates the technology and improves reliability.

How to Protect Your Files in Claude Code

You can protect important files in Claude Code by setting up a file-protection hook that stops Claude from changing selected files without permission.

Step 1: Open Claude Code

Open your project folder and start Claude Code.

Step 2: Open the Hooks settings

Inside Claude Code, open the Hooks section by using the /hooks command.

Step 3: Create a PreToolUse hook

Choose PreToolUse. This allows you to check an action before Claude performs it.

Step 4: Select file-editing actions

Configure the hook to monitor Claude's Write and Edit actions.

Step 5: Choose protected files

Add the files you don't want Claude to modify, for example, your .env, configuration files, database settings, or other important files.

Step 6: Set the action to block

Configure the hook so that when Claude tries to modify one of these protected files, the action is denied.

Step 7: Save and test

Ask Claude to edit a normal file. It should work normally. Then ask it to edit a protected file. The hook should stop the change.

Step 8: Expand your protection

Add other critical files whenever needed.

Best practice: Protect secrets, environment files, production configurations, and other files where an accidental AI edit could cause problems.
